Goods and Sundry

This post features student writing.

While Gabby, Jamie, and I (Lilli) were on an adventure in Arusha today, the rest of the group followed through on another successful day of teaching and painting at Maji Moto Primary! Ill account each group’s day below.

The girls and I set off early in the morning, and spent the first few hours shopping for food with The Mamas. We weaved our way through an open air market with stalls showcasing various fruits, vegetables, spices, and household items. Then, we moved on to a more commercial supermarket, where we were able to buy some necessities for the group (Oreos, coconut cookies, Nutella, Frosted Flakes, the like…). We then split with The Mamas and sifted through a second hand clothing market. We bargained and found some unlikely treasures. (I had my eye on a snazzy pink pullover covered with printed flowers, but my haggling was not fruitful after all.) We ran our last few errands and grabbed lunch in the city. We got home in time for dinner and joined the group for our nightly meeting.

In the village, Molly, Dillon, Pete, Dave, Carmen, and Ella worked diligently. On their way to school they were able to finally play with the adorably precious puppies next door. The dogs have now been named: Duke, Bug, Miller, and Rambler. At school, they stood in as teachers for a few English classes and were able to institute their own lesson plans! They taught for forty minutes, then broke for lunch. After lunch, they went back to school, this time to paint classrooms. We´ll be working  on each classroom for a few days, layering white paint to create one cohesive, opaque coat. After a few hours of painting, they returned home for rest and dinner.
