We Made It to Maji Moto

Our flight across the Atlantic and down the Horn of Africa was long, but plenty of snacks and layover exploring kept us entertained. Our flight was the maiden voyage for KLM’s new class of Boeing 787 Dreamliner, so upon our arrival at Kilimanjaro airport we were given a “shower of affection” by the fire brigade and greeted by dancers and cupcakes on the tarmac! Early-leader Shauna completed this royal welcome with Aaron and Cha-Cha, the executive councilmen of Maji Moto, who led us to the village for a late dinner, a quick unpack, and an orientation for how to use the cho, or pit-toilet. The squatting and bugs intimidated a few of us, but in a few days, none of us will dream of ever having to poop another way!

Our first full day in Maji Moto was defined by a stimulating orientation where we discussed expectations for the program and our itinerary for the next three weeks. We split up this session with a delicious lunch cooked by Mamma Killerai and her posse of kitchen helpers. In the afternoon, Aaron invited us to the funeral of an esteemed village elder. The funeral was a joyous celebration of life complete with speakers blaring grainy gospel music and clutches of Maasai elders dressed in checkered shukas.

Night falls in Major Moto under a wilderness of stars as each and every one of us gets tucked under our bug nets and relishes the first full night sleep after 48 long hours. Internet is slow but we will share more photos soon!
