Day in the Life

This post features student writing.

While in Maji Moto, our routine has been similar, however, today we were sent out in groups of three to experience how the Tanzanian locals live. Each group of students had a variety of experiences ranging from plucking the feathers off of a chicken being prepared for a meal to taking a scenic walk through towering corn fields. We were all able to immerse ourselves in this culture and enjoy the hidden treasures of Maji Moto.

Initially, my group and I were taken past the home of our host to a hidden river which snaked through the edge of Maji Moto. At this stop we learned how local women naturally filtered water using gravity and only the limited resources at their disposal.

In order to more comfortably carry the filtered water back to the house, our host wrapped a conga atop our heads.

Back at the house, we used a dictionary to try to communicate with our hosts.

We helped our mama make lunch in the building beside the sleeping quarters. We all helped prepare beans, rice, and mouth watering vegetables.

According to Gabby, her group took a, “long but beautiful walk which led to a cornfield”.

The third group spent the day with mamas from the village who shared their knowledge of how to prepare a chicken.
