Meet the Leaders

SHAUNA BULGER
St. Lawrence University, B.S., Conservation Biology

While studying at St. Lawrence, Shauna earned her degree in conservation biology and minored in statistics and African studies. A Research Fellow in the Department of Biology, Shauna studied climate change perceptions, fragmentation ecology, and protected areas management. As a junior, she lived in East Africa and interned with the Wildlife Conservation Society. Supported by a research travel grant, Shauna compared the relationships between federal conservation policy, citizen compliance, and conservation success in Kenya and Rwanda. In her spare time, Shauna also volunteered with the Kigali-based social enterprise, The Women’s Bakery; a transformative experience that ignited her passions for women’s empowerment and sustainable development. Currently, Shauna works as a data analyst for a veterinary biotech company. Recently, however, she accepted a graduate degree position at Dartmouth College, where she is excited to study corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. Shauna is proficient in Kiswahili and French.

ZACH NELSON
Dartmouth College, B.A., History, modified with Security Studies

During his time at Dartmouth, Zach became fascinated with the study of post-colonial history, resource conflict, and entrepreneurship. While still in college, these interests collided, culminating in a summer spent establishing a sustainable crop-resale business in rural Rwanda. After graduating, Zach spent nearly three years living and working in Myanmar—first with an agricultural startup as a Princeton in Asia Fellow, and then coordinating a program to track hate speech and incidents of communal violence during the height of the Rohingya Crisis. Now, Zach works in South Sudan, designing civilian peacekeeping initiatives with UN agencies and civil society groups. Zach is a fierce advocate for the transformative power of experiential education and can usually be found running, reading, or debating politics. After the summer, Zach will be starting a master’s program in London focusing on conflict, development, and innovation. Although Zach is an American citizen, he was born and raised in Southeast Asia (Singapore and Indonesia), where he developed a deep appreciation for jungle trekking and loud diesel engines. Language-wise, he can get by in Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia, and Burmese. Last year he led Community Service Rwanda.
